Here you will find valleys crossed by rivers, extinct volcanoes, bizarre rock formations and beautiful maars.

Experience moments of happiness in the midst of beautiful nature. Furthermore, the Eifel offers numerous castles and palaces, adventure parks for children and much more. If it should be more hustle and bustle, the cities of Cologne, Koblenz and Trier are easily accessible.

The Waldsee (swimming lake) is only about 1 km away. For children there is a nice playground directly at the lake. There you can rent bikes and boats or enjoy the view of the lake from one of the restaurants.

Personal leisure recommendations

The Eifel offers many leisure activities and natural sites. The national park in the north of the Eifel offers with the Rursee not only the perfect place to enjoy nature during hikes or on viewing platforms, but also numerous water sports and swimming opportunities to cool down on hot days. Also of particular interest is the volcanic region of the Eifel, where volcanic activity has created gigantic circular depressions. Around the topic of volcanoes explains the museum Lava-Dom in Mendig on.

Maria Laach Monastery and Lake Laach

Lake Laach is the largest lake in Rhineland-Palatinate and a popular destination for excursions. In summer, a jump into the cool water is tempting and there are exciting things to discover on the eastern shore of the lake. There, small bubbles rise in the water - these illustrate the volcanic history of the lake. The beautiful circular hiking trail is about 7 km long.

Maria Laach Abbey
The Benedictine Abbey of Maria Laach settled on the shores of Lake Laach in the 11th century. The monastery is an important building of Romanesque architecture and houses several monastic enterprises. Thus belong
a market garden, a farm store, a boat rental and also a hotel with gastronomy belong to the abbey.

Excursion to Monreal

Picturesquely overlooked by the two castle ruins of Löwenburg and Philippsburg, the half-timbered village of Monreal lies in the middle of the idyllic Elz valley. The numerous half-timbered houses of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries - a remnant of the clothiers of the Baroque era - are also artistic monuments worth seeing. In addition to the idyllic location and picturesque village centre already mentioned, numerous hiking trails, including the "Monrealer Ritterschlag" dream trail with impressive vantage points, invite visitors to experience the unique landscape.
In the village itself, there are numerous small places to stop for refreshments, such as Cafe Plüsch or Altes Pfarrhaus.

Trip to Koblenz

Whether a stroll through the city of Koblez or with the gondola to the fortress Ehrenbreitstein. Koblenz is worth a visit ; )

From the German Corner you can take the cable car to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. The fortress on the rocky spur high above the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle has an almost magical attraction.

In the historic buildings of the fortress you will find exciting museums and exhibitions. Whether the history of photography, interesting facts about Rhineland-Palatinate as a wine and travel destination or archaeology on the Middle Rhine and Moselle. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, there are always new temporary exhibitions.

The Mayen Castle Festival takes place every summer. Embedded in the medieval town fortifications, Genoveva Castle rises above the market square on the south-west side of the town. The special atmosphere of the romantic courtyard at the foot of the mighty golo tower makes a visit to the Mayen Castle Festival a special experience.

Hiking
on the Moselle and in the Eifel

Wasserfall

Dream paths in the Eifel. Once covered by glowing lava, the Eastern Eifel is now a green and fertile land. Nature lovers affectionately call it the "green heart of Europe". But a hike through the Eastern Eifel is first and foremost
an exciting excursion into times long past: A multitude of pointed mountain cones, special geological formations and the large crater lake Laacher See are evidence of the original volcanic landscape.
In the centre lies the historic town of Mayen, the cultural and economic centre of the region. It invites you to take a stroll, relax
and recharge your batteries. The following hiking trails in the Eifel tempt you to go hiking.

CASTLE ELTZ

Burg Eltz is a 12th-century hilltop castle and one of the most famous of its kind in Germany.

It is considered the "most beautiful castle in Europe", a "fairy tale in stone" and the "epitome of a knight's castle". Come and see for yourself!

You can park at Burg Eltz in the car park. During opening hours, you can also take a look at the inner courtyard and the treasure chamber or enjoy a drink and chips.

Bürresheim Castle

Beautiful castle in the Nettetal, 5 km from Mendig. Also considered the
"sister" of Eltz Castle, as it has a similar design.
In the Middle Ages, Bürresheim Castle was actually a castle.
a knight's residence and a fortified building at the same time. Nevertheless, the designation
designation of "castle" is very appropriate here, as the magnificent interior
of this Rhenish residential castle makes the visitor dream of times

parts of the castle have been added to and rebuilt again and again, and there is a beautiful castle garden.

The cycle tour runs along the tracks of the disused railway between the towns of Münstermaifeld, Polch, Ochtendung and Mayen. At the Polch junction, the trail continues either to Ochtendung (10 km) or to Münstermaifeld (10 km). The main attraction of the cycle tour between the Rhine and the Moselle is the approximately 40-metre-high natural stone viaduct over the Nettetal valley between Polch and Mayen, which is followed by two tunnels 250 and 500 metres long. On the section towards Münstermaifeld, the water playground in Mertloch and the open-air swimming pool in Münstermaifeld offer cooling on hot days. The family-friendly cycle path leads through the countryside with almost no inclines, far away from the traffic. Playgrounds and refreshment stops invite you to take a break.

There are almost no ascents on the asphalt cycle path, but plenty of opportunities to rest and see sights: two viaducts, numerous bridges, four tunnels as well as Eifel maars and extinct volcanoes.
As if made for leisure cyclists, families with children and inline skaters - and even in both directions.

OVER 1500 KILOMETRES OF CYCLING PLEASURE WITH MAPS, ROADBOOKS AND GPS TRACKS

Around the legendary Nürburgring, in the municipalities of Adenau/Hocheifel and Mayen/Vordereifel, there are beautiful, challenging and scenic routes for cyclists.

For racing bike enthusiasts, the Radarena am Ring has compiled over 1,500 kilometres in the "Rennrad-Arena", mapped them and also prepared them as roadbooks and GPS tracks.

In one of the most varied MTB regions in Germany, mountain bikers will find exciting trails and wonderful views of the Eifel. Here, scenic enjoyment and sporting challenge merge together. Through unspoilt nature, past volcanoes, through rocky passages, over flowing trails and to idyllic (bathing) lakes. A stop at an Eifel inn at the end of the tour is of course also part of the experience.

Pure mountain bike experience in the land of maars and volcanoes - in the Volcano Eifel Trail Park (approx. 750 km of signposted trails with over 17,500 metres of altitude), as well as around the legendary Nürburgring - in the Radarena am Ring! LVR Open-Air Museum Kommern

There is plenty for children and young people of all ages to discover at the open-air museum - making it a perfect destination for families.

Our tips for families:

There are different animals to discover in each building group: oxen, cows, chickens, donkeys, goats, sheep, pigs and many more.

Look over the shoulder of the blacksmith, the stonemason or the housekeepers.

Do your children still know telephone boxes? Show them at the Rhineland Marketplace.

Explore the museum with a geocache.

Immerse yourself in earlier times at one of the events.

LAVA DOME

In the "Land of Volcanoes" you can safely become part of a volcanic eruption and experience the extreme forces of nature in a spectacular way. In the volcano workshop, the basics of volcanism are taught in a playful way at large experimental tables, "talking stones" tell the stories of famous volcanoes and in the round cinema, a future scenario answers the frequently asked question "What if the Laacher See volcano were to erupt again today?"

Afterwards, you can descend into the lava cellars, right into the middle of a system of tunnels and shafts that were created by basalt mining in the early modern period and which the Mendig beer brewers later also knew how to use as what was once the world's largest refrigerator.

Eifel Museum and German
Slate Mine Mayen

An exciting journey back in time awaits visitors to the unique German Slate Mine in Mayen:

Where the Devonian sea stretched 400 million years ago, the winding passages of the slate mine now wind 16 metres below Genovevaburg Castle.

This special museum provides vivid information about the work and everyday life of the slate miners. Touching is expressly permitted in the 340-metre-long labyrinth of tunnels, for the slate mine offers adventure for all the senses.

A lift takes visitors into a world of men, machines and dynamite. In the underground passages there are old lorries, rope saws, huge walking excavators and 20-kilogram pneumatic hammers.

The attraction for children and adults alike is a simulated lorry ride through the gallery.

Landesmuseum Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

The fortress on the rocky spur high above the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers exudes an almost magical attraction.

Visitors can expect a lively cultural centre with exciting history, four exhibition halls of the Koblenz State Museum and many culinary delights, as well as great cultural events.

Discover attractive permanent and temporary exhibitions in four exhibition houses. The focus is on photography, archaeology, viticulture and enjoyment as well as economic and cultural history. We also offer a wide range of educational activities for young and old as well as exciting accompanying programmes.
