During Advent, the Moselle transforms into a magical ribbon of lights, with half-timbered houses, historic wine cellars and the scent of mulled wine filling the air.
In Bernkastel-Kues, market stalls surround the historic market square, while a floating Advent wreath gently drifts on the river. On December 23, divers even swim through the Moselle carrying torches on their way towards Landshut Castle.
Nearby Traben-Trarbach attracts visitors with its “Mosel-Wein-Nachts-Markt”, held in romantically illuminated Art Nouveau wine cellars. Here, you can discover local vintners’ mulled wine and handmade crafts in a truly atmospheric underground setting.
The route is rounded off by charming weekend markets in Cochem, set against the backdrop of Reichsburg Castle, in the historic cathedral complex of Trier, and at the castles of Alken and Beilstein – perfect stops for a winter stroll along the Moselle.

Around 1900, Traben-Trarbach was known as the second-largest wine trading centre in Europe. Today, you can discover fascinating insights into the history of wine production and trade.
A guided tour takes you into the enormous wine cellars hidden beneath the town. Connected like a labyrinth and stretching beneath the streets, these historic cellars reveal a fascinating side of Traben-Trarbach that remains hidden from the world above.

Erbeskopf – Rhineland-Palatinate’s Highest Point
In winter, the Erbeskopf transforms into the highest winter sports area in Rhineland-Palatinate. Two short, snow-covered ski slopes with a drag lift, several groomed cross-country skiing trails and a separate toboggan run offer easy winter fun for families.
The 816-metre summit trail is kept clear, allowing visitors to enjoy the views from the Sky Tower even in freezing temperatures or join a guided torchlight hike through the national park.
A winter equipment rental shop right at the bottom station provides skis, sledges and snowboards, while cosy huts serving mulled wine and hot soup offer a welcome break to warm up.
With its combination of winter sports, nature and beautiful views, Erbeskopf is an ideal destination for a spontaneous day in the snow in the Hunsrück.
